GE-2009 Lesson – BJP should never forget its Roots !
Congrats Congress
The general elections in 2009 has been a wonderful entertainer for those people who take interest in politics in India, and since i am in the category of those people, i am happy to conclude … the general elections were very well conducted, the festival of democracy was celebrated lavishly and with pomp.
As is the case in every elections, this time too, we have some surprising results that the political parties must have never expected.
While it was generally understood across political circles and media, that this election would result in a fractured verdict, and a hung parliament was inevitable, the era of coalition politics being to thought to be maturing in India … the opposite happenned … the Congress Party had its biggest win in several years, and emerged as the largest party in the parliament.
The Congress Party it seems has won an unprecedented win, and i would give the credit to Rahul Gandhi, who inspite of his childish looks and Sachin Tendulkar like voice, has re-energized the congress. I wonder when Priyanka Gandhi would take a plunge in Politics. If she does take a plunge before the next General Elections, i have no doubts in my mind that Congress Party would “easily” get 2/3rd majority in the Parliament … considering the Mess that the BJP finds itself in today.
Dynastic politics at its “continuance” i would say …
Its heartening to see, at this time when the country is having many “security issues” in its “padosi countries” … having a stable government is the need of the hour … and the country will have a Stable Government to tackle any situation that may arise.
BJP should know itself
The more surprising aspect of the election was the “unprecedented” decline of the BJP.
I frankly thought that BJP and Congress would get somewhat “equal” seats … and regional parties would play a “major role” in the parliament … and President Pratibha Patil would have her task cut out, as to which party she should invite to form the government.
There seems to be some “identity crises” that the BJP is undergoing, i guess … and some of the controversies that the leadership of BJP had during the crucial pre-election phase, and the Narendra Modi factor … was making the party itself confused and thereby making the people confused in its priorities.
BJP has its existence because of a particular ideology … BJP neglecting its ideology is the reason for its defeat …
The BJP should not forget its “roots” or “character” … as those roots and character of a “hindu party” is the “image” it has got in public’s mind … shying away from this “hindu” image creates confusion in voter’s mind … and hence voters prefer congress as against BJP … in the “Secular” sphere/plane that the election was fought in.
UPA on the other hand is all about being ” Hardcore Secular” … with no proper ideology … its like gambling in a game of poker … and this time too congress has managed to bag the pot !
Hindus are no gamblers … they are firm believers in an ideology … and that is the nature of Hindus in general … let this be understood by the BJP leadership first … as it owes it existence to the issues concerning the hindus in general !
Surely, Narendra Modi has a good name for his development efforts, but the BJP projecting him as the next “big leader” in the national level politics, on the eve of the General Elections, has back fired.
I have been stating in my previous blogs, that the BJP and the Sangh Parivaar should continue to “voice” their “Pro-Hindu Agendas” … and at the same time, they should also shed the “communal tag” that they have acquired, due to past unfortunate incidents.
And i say this because, essentially “Hinduism” is not communal in nature … “Hindutva” is ! … this is what BJP/Sangh Parivaar should understand and decide its future course … afterall, a political party should rule the country like its family-head !

Hi Vamsi,
I totally agree that the elections-09 were wonderful & yes entertaining! I have never been so interested in politics but whatever daily read I do, I wanted the UPA government to win & excel. Be it Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka, Mr.Singh our PM or Naveen Jindal……the personalisties as I read about, undoubtedly this is the government India wanted…!
Good read.
