Understanding Hindu Gods and Goddesses
I belong to the religion of Hinduism. And I am very proud of being a Hindu. When I think about Hinduism, instantly my mind takes me to the festivals in Hinduism namely; Diwali, Holi, Krishnashtami, Shiv Ratri, Lakshmi Puja, Rama Navami, and many such festivals wherein we worship the gods or goddesses underlying in that particular festival.
In Hinduism, we have lots and lots of Gods and Goddesses that various people worship. The people in other religions are quite perplexed … as to how we worship lots of Gods and Goddesses in our Religion. The people of these religions worship or pray to one god, and wonder why Hindus worship lots of Gods and Goddesses. And the people of these religions just don’t understand the significance of Idols or Statues of Gods and Goddesses in Hinduism.
Perhaps this diversity in our beliefs and practices, to worship different kinds of Gods and Goddesses makes our religion Hinduism, the Mother of All Religions.
We Hindus do consider God as One, and we call him as Lord Krishna. In Bhagawat Gita, the sacred book of Hindus, Lord Krishna has himself said that he is the “Supreme Personality of Godhead”. A statement from such a magnificent personality like Lord Krishna is enough to say that God is indeed ONE.
So, we Hindus recognize Lord Krishna as the only and One “Supreme Personality of Godhead”. Then people of other religions may ask … why then we worship lots of Gods and Goddesses … and do pujas to the statues of those gods and goddesses? Good question. This is how I would like to answer those questions.
God and Guru.
We know that GOD is ONE. But, we Hindus consider that same God having many “Characteristics” or “Qualities” or “Avatars” which are INFINITE. If we claim that we can completely understand GOD then it would be a mistake. If we do such a thing like defining him in “few selected parameters” then it would mean that we are confining GOD to some few Characteristics. GOD is beyond all this and may I make it very clear … HE CANNOT BE UNDERSTOOD.
God can only be REALIZED … and those persons who have realized GOD … or have Holy Spirit in them … and Called GURUS. I consider People like Lord Krishna, Shirdi Saibaba, Guru Govind Sahib, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti of Ajmer, Jesus Christ, Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him), Gautama Buddha, Shri Raghavendra, Bahaullah, and many other people who have “realized god” or “have holy spirit” in them as GURUs.
Previously in the Introduction, I have said that Lord Krishna is the “Supreme Personality of Godhead”. And now I say Lord Krishna as GURU. One might ask why this discrepancy? Well … GOD himself is the greatest GURU or Teacher … right?
So, it would right to say, that GOD have “Conditioned” certain people … and have given the boon of “Some of his characteristics” in their nature … which makes them GURU. So, each such GURU has some unique Characteristics, which make them an “Avatar of GOD”.
To state one example, that is why, we consider Shirdi Saibaba as a GURU as well as “Kaliyuga Avatar”.
Let me confirm, all GURUs are UNIQUE. No GURU is the same as the other. But they all preach that “God is One” or “Allah Malik” or “God is Great”.
Understanding Gods and Goddesses.
We now know that Lord Krishna is Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Hinduism, we consider Lord Krishna as the Avatar of Lord Vishnu.
In Hindism, there is “Trinity” which consists of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, who are the Creator, Preserver and the Destroyer respectively.
One might find some inherent discrepancies in the above two lines.
If Lord Krishna is an Avatar of Lord Vishnu … then Lord Vishnu must be Greater than Lord Krishna … Right?
If “God is One”, then why do Hinduism have the “Trinity” namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva)?
Is Lord Krishna Wrong when he says in Bhagawat Gita that he is in fact the “Supreme Personality of Godhead”, if he is the Avatar of Lord Vishnu?
Well … Lord Krishna is right when he says that he is “Supreme Personality of Godhead”. As mentioned before, GOD has infinite “natures” or “Characteristics” or “Avatars” and his main “Natures” are “To Create, To Preserve, To Destroy”. These are the “Fundamental Characteristics of GOD”.
We Hindus worship these “Fundamental Characteristics of GOD” as Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
All these Gods are essentially the “parts” of the LORD KRISHNA or Supreme Personality of Godhead. So, when we say Lord Shiva has performed “Thandav Nrutya/Dance”, it is with an underlying assumption that Lord Krishna has himself taken the Avatar of Lord Shiva and performed “Thandav Nrutya/Dance”.
We worship the Feminine Aspect of God, as Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati, who are the consorts of the HINDU TRINITY respectively.
But, all these Goddesses are essentially “Characteristics” of Lord Krishna Himself. That is why he says in Bhagawat Gita, “He is the Parent, He is the Friend, He is Husband, He is Wife, He is the Lover and He is the Enemy”. “He is the Cause and Effect”.
Since, we humans have minute brains, we just do not have the capabilities to understand God in his entirety. So, to help us understand him … in the way he wants … he has given us his “Avatars” to us … like these Gods and Goddesses … to worship him through these Gods and Goddesses.
Significance of Statues or Idols in Hinduism
This is a very significant part in Hinduism. We worship Lord Rama and Lord Krishna using their statues. We pray to them, light incense sticks, offer flowers, pray Bhajans in front of these statues and finally when the prayer is done, we do “Shashtang Namaaskar” to these idols.
One might ask why do we take the help of Statues or Idols to worship our god. It is because it helps us to give form to our beloved Gods … or shall I say … Avatars of God, and we see that Avatar in these Statues.
During the time of Swami Vivekananda, the King of One Kindgom in India asked why we Hindus offer prayers to “Statues” or “Pictures” of Gods or Goddesses. Swami Vivekananda, then asked the minister of that King to spit on the photo of the King hanging on the wall. The Minister was furious at that suggestion. Swami Vivekananda then explains to the Minister, “The way you view your King being the same as his Photo, we Hindus believe the Gods as the same as their Statues or Pictures”.
Hinduism the Mother of All Religions
I know that this is a very contentious topic that I am about to discuss. The readers of this blogpost may view this as an “Attempt” to glorify Hinduism as the world’s greatest religion. I must state that I need not make such an “Attempt” … its because HINDUISM IS THE GREATEST RELIGION … it is the Mother of All Religions.
In Christianity, there were some Gurus, the foremost was Lord Jesus Christ. In Islam there was Prophet Mohammed. In Buddhism there was Lord Buddha. All these Gurus have their own teachings … and those teachings are regarded as the “religious teachings” of that particular religion.
But it is only in Hinduism, which does not have “One Theory” of GOD. There are many Theories … brought by many GURUS in Hinduism … which make it the “RELIGION OF HINDUISM”. Hinduism is a Vast Ocean … and this is the ocean which had given birth to the “Principles of other religions” worldwide. The genesis of this ocean is “Sanatana Dharma”.
I am Proud to be a Hindu.

Aum Sai Ram
Hie Vamsi
I AM A PROUD HINDU 2,
Yet the way I look at some of these things @ God r different.
please permit me 2 put forth my views without taking offence. Its is not meant 2 hurt urs or anybodys feelings with the way I think.
I feel there is only one creator & power that sustains all thats happening.
Its a power, a shakti, not a Him , not a Her.
All the others , be it Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, Mohhamad, Buddha, et al , all are
Mahapurush. They were humans who had some more or extra powers than the others.
Today , 2 some people , Dr. Ambedkar is a God. They literally worship him, but you will accept that he was a human like U & me, but had that something extra that he was revered & then gradually, for the convenience & exploitation of some people , deemed God.
Lets say Gandhiji, he 2 had something that the rest lacked. Take Newton, he had something that others did not have..and so on, they lead manking in various fields.
Similarly Lord Krishna had virtues or knowledge beyond what the commoner then had, so he was hailed as God.
I again believe that all these were Mahapurush – those who had that much more than the other. Instead of simply worshiping their statues, why cant we inculcate what they taught & preached, to uplift our lifes, why not practice the Geeta, rather than simply reading it . They practiced, so they were gr8.
Therse r my views

vs
@ vijay …
its true that gandhiji, ambedkar, newton, etc. have accomplished more than a normal human being.
some people worship photo of ambedkar, they are worshiping his ideals i guess.
when i say someone is GURU i mean he REALISED GOD or HAS HOLY SPIRIT IN HIM.
swami vivekananda is said to have seen LIGHT, so he is GURU.
i dont know about the other people mentioned above.
Hie Vamsi,
i m just inplying that all the Gods we worship were Super human – Mahapurush – yet created by God.
vs
@ vijay …
oh ok …
Hie Vamsi,
Did I hurt ur feelings.
Please – that was the last thing I wanted 2 do .
Just expressed my views of things .
Cheer up friend , I respect anybody who has such feelings 4 God,

@ VS …
nothing better than informed & logical discussion, arguement …
we are essentially argumentative indians you see …
Na Vamsi,
I am not argueing wid u on this one. its a matter of faith & perception.
yes , agreed – Indians r argumentative , incl. me
vs
@ vijay …
so true …
TO ME HINDUISM IS THE WAY OF LIFE
BUT ESSENTIALLY OUR ANCESTERS RESPECTED ALL LIVING CREATURES AND OUR RISHIS WERE COMPILING MANY OF OUR VEDAS AS YOU SAID THE WORD SANATAN IS THE TRUE WORD
NO BEGINNING NO END FOR OUR MAKER GOD
I BELIEVE GOD HAS GIVEN EVERY LIVING, JYOTI OF LIFE SO WE LIVE AND AS THE JYOTI MOVES OUT THE BODY BECOMES LIFELESS
THAT IS WHY WE SAY GOD IS WITHIN ALL LIVING
BUT WHO ARE WE?
WE ARE ATMA ON A LEARNING JOURNEY TO BE UNITED WITH JYOTI
WELL WE SEE JYOTI IS LIFE FOR ALL LIVING SO THIS IS PERFECT IMMORTAL LOVE OF GOD FOR ALL LIVINGS.
FROM SANATAN CAME MANY RELIGIONS AS PEOPLE WANTED HAVE PERFECT SOCIETIES
@ ramanji …
quite true what you said …
i ws out of my seat by seeing ur immense useless trials 2 mke othrs believe how hinduism is mother of al religion!! ur 1st statement abt pride itself shows that how insecure u r abt d ranking of ur religion…n ther wer so many pathetic explanations.. m sure if u wer born in other religion u wud hav gone out of ur way 2 justify tht religion as the greatest one. u hav only 1 view, d 1 wich is forcd on u since birth..u dnt hav a thinking of ur own…a belief in god doesnt change 1s life, those who dnt believe in god, lead life similarly 2 those who believe, so UR translation of hinduism hs no significance..u r justifying prayers n ‘hindu’ gods, i dunno if god created man or men(like u) created gods! u r trying 2 hide d loopholes in hinduism by adding cheap attitude in ur presentation. ur ideas put into words wud suffocate ne qualified intellectual. so acquaint urself wid mor knowledge than 2 enforce ur views on others!!!
b happy!!(n let every1 b happy)
you have a concept of liberation in this world while muslims have aconcept of life here after. Your religion says that a person with a good deeds will born in higher casts while a person with a bad deeds will born in lower cast. it means all the people are not equal in your god eyes.secondly, if a person born in this world even in the higher cast then how can get rid of worries. so think for a while that which religion is better and a God who can create man for the first time can create man for second time too. you are waiting for “Kalki O tar” who is that person. in reality that person was descendent 1400 hundred years ago who is prophet Muhammad (PBUH). if you are not believing on me than compare the characteristics of Prophet Muhammad and Kalki O tar.
@ wajjiha,
both religions of hinduism and islam are good.
but i guess you got it wrong when you say that in hinduism people are not equal in gods eyes.
the thing you are talking about a person born in a particular caste, which you term as superior or inferior (actually a large people in hinduism also think likewise, and hence we have this problem of “caste system”) is actually a measure / degree of abilities of a particular set of people.
for example, generally in todays society doctors are considered superior than a nurse. why is that its because of the acumen of doctor to handle heath problems of patients is more than that of a nurse.
same way, in hinduism if a particular soul is born in a “brahmana family” and fails to the jobs that he is expected to do, and derides people who have less “acumen”, then in the next birth, his chances of being born in a family of less acumen are greater. hence, brahmanas are considered as having the greatest acumen in spirutual terms, next are kshtriyas, vyasyas and then shudras.
and if a person having a lower acumen does some meritorious deeds, then in the next birth his chances of taking birth in a brahmana family are also greater.
this is law of karma, its called justice of the lord.
perhaps the drawbacks in the teachings of islam, to fully comprehend the “eternal truth” is the reason for the eventual downfall of islam as a religion.
if you refer to your islamic texts, then you would find a concept of “qayamat” which is the end time, or the tribulation as explained in christianity, and after that “allah” would judge each and every muslim, and do justice to them. after which there would be end of islam and christianity.
also, its said that within 1500 years of the birth of islam, the religion would be doomed, as per some articles on the internet.
i have seen the thing about “kalki o tar” on the internet and a hindu brahmin ved prakash validating that Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is the real kalki.
i would say, these are just coincidences.
i frankly think that islam and christianity are in their last days of existence. may allah bless you and your family !
cheers !
Hello! My name is Kali, what a coincidence, huh? Anyway, I belong to no particular religion. My parents raised me Agnostic so that, one day, I may decide for myself which religion is the better to place my faith in. Lately, I have been reading a lot about Hinduism. It has absolutely FACINATED me! I want to learn so very much more. If you don’t mind…I would love to discuss some things with you, whenever you have time.
Thank you,
-Kali-
@ kali,
your curiosity about hinduism is much worth praising …
perhaps, you could EDUCATE yourself with some articles on the net, on the subject …
if you find that some of my articles on hinduism are very “attractive” for you to comprehend the subject, i consider it was worth putting my views on hindusim, on this blog.
moreover, its completely futile if you would want to become a “jumping jack” wrt to religions …
cheers !
I’m sorry…
I do not really understand what you mean when you say “its completely futile if you would want to become a ‘jumping jack’ wrt to religions…”
I’ve been reading a lot, mostly about Krishna, Kali, and Shiva. I’m quite fascinated but, so very confused. The different “characteristics” of the many gods being manifested in different ways is so very difficult for me to understand. I’ve learned much from reading things on the web but, there is still quite a lot left to be explained.
Thank you so very much for talking with me,
-Kali-
@ kali,
what i meant by “its completely futile if you would want to become a ‘jumping jack’ wrt to religions…” … is that one should always follow his own beliefs and guru, whatever may be the circumstances are …
nothing wrong in “knowing about others religion” …
I’m so very glad that you feel that way…I am merely just looking for a religion I feel is “right” so that I can place faith in it. I beleive religion is vastly important. Although, now, I am an Agnostic, I feel that some degree of an organized religion, one feels to be right, gives one meaning in his or her life. The material world seems less important when one has a god, higher than themselves, watching after them. I’m going to continue reading your blog. I find the Hindu religion to be a beautiful one, however, quite difficult to understand. The things you discuss on your site have been vastly helpful…
Thank you,
-Kali-
